CNA, LVN, or RN: what per-diem work looks like at every license level

Per-diem isn't one job — it's a way of working that looks different depending on your license. Here's what the day-to-day, the demand, and the typical Orange County rates look like for CNAs, LVNs, and RNs working independently.

CNA — the backbone of the building

Certified Nursing Assistants are the most-requested per-diem role in skilled nursing and assisted living, because direct care needs scale with census. Expect ADLs, vitals, transfers, and being the eyes and ears of the floor. Typical OC per-diem range: $22–30/hr, with weekend and NOC shifts trending higher. Per-diem is popular with CNAs in school — nursing students especially — because you can wrap shifts around a class schedule with no minimum commitment.

LVN — the medication and treatment engine

Licensed Vocational Nurses carry the med pass, treatments, wound care, and a big share of the documentation in long-term care. Per-diem demand is steady because a missing LVN is a same-day problem for a facility — someone has to pass meds. Typical OC per-diem range: $40–55/hr. LVNs often build a rotation of two or three buildings they know well, which keeps the work familiar while staying independent.

RN — assessment, supervision, and scope

Registered Nurses bring assessment, care planning, supervision, and the clinical judgment calls. In skilled nursing, per-diem RNs often anchor a unit or cover supervisory gaps. Typical OC per-diem range: $45–65/hr, with the top of the range showing up on short-notice, weekend, and higher-acuity shifts. For RNs balancing a full-time hospital role, per-diem is a common way to add selective extra shifts without taking on a second employer — because there is no second employer; you work as your own business.

Whatever your license, the mechanics on BoomRN are the same: see the posted rate, take it or counter once, and you have the final say. Your license level changes the work and the range — not your independence.
